![]() Post contributed by Romain Johnson II The Black Lives Matter movement is a campaign that began in 2013 after the killer of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman, was found not guilty of the murder of the 17 year-old boy. This was a final straw for people of the African American community, causing Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullers, three African American women, to help create a social media presence for the African American community. This movement across the internet was not only trying to bring the black community together, but also to suppress anti-black racism that is going on in our communities today, as well as help build or rebuild the black liberation movement here in the United States of America. Some people who do not understand the struggle of the African American community look at the Black Lives Matter campaign as something that is against the Caucasian race, but that is a misconception. The Black Lives Matter campaign aims to help the community of African Americans to come together and stand up against the injustice that has been plaguing our communities for years, even after Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. This campaign would probably not have been nearly as effective nor spread as quickly as it did if it weren’t for social media. A big part of the success of the Black Lives Matter campaign is social marketing that the African American community does for the movement. When tweeting, posting, or uploading different pictures and videos to social media, people have been using #BlackLivesMatter to help promote and bring awareness to the events that are going on in our country by causing the topic to trend online. Police brutality has always been a huge problem in the black community and, now that this campaign has been created, people use this hashtag to gain support from fellow followers who support the movement. This is something that has taken new heights in the internet world, and this hashtag has made its way from the internet world to the real world, giving people an opportunity to actually help support the African American community in many different ways. The campaign’s website gives everyone the opportunity to see what #BlackLivesMatter is really about, and gives you the opportunity to help with the cause. #BlackLivesMatter
