![]() Contributed by Meg Takagaki Wikipedia is a globally recognized online encyclopedia that allows anyone on the internet to edit its content. Recently, the folks at Wikipedia announced that they are going to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically edit low-quality content. Some say that diffusion of this system indicates less work for the volunteer editors, meaning less participation. However, the objective for this new AI project, the Objective Revision Evaluation Service (ORES), is to increase editors’ participation by attracting them with better-automated tools that “automatically identify blatant vandalism.” While this sounds like an innovative and high quality service, it is still difficult for the AI to identify whether the content within the Wikipedia article is true and valid information. Personally, I believe that this shift from humans to machines is not surprising in the age of digital media and communication. The widely known software, Microsoft Word, though not an online service, has an automatic grammar and spelling correction function programmed. This news about Wikipedia changes our perception of how we use automatic correction service online. It offers us an opportunity to predict that in the near future, the internet could be filled with the applied usage of AI. For example, social media may establish similar automatic content correction systems against vandalism to attract future users. At the current stage, human intervention is still necessary to decide the final content of the post even after the being corrected by the AI. With the innovation and development of technology, however, I believe that a complete shift of brain, from human brain to AI, could happen very soon in the coming decade.
